Putting the Qbox
to the test

Pilot projects

Vestia
Vestia: social housing and PV
phase: up and running | Qboxes: 16

Recently the project with Vestia came online, a housing corporation with 70.000 units in the Rotterdam, The Hague and Utrecht areas. In this project the energy usage per household is monitored with high detail in order to optimize the use of the collective solar PV panel system. Also in this pilot, we will test the user-friendliness of the Qmunity website, our energy portal for residents.

Elkien
Elkien / Leeuwarden:
social housing and PV
phase: up and running | Qboxes: 24 (6+18)

The pilot in Leeuwarden consits of an apartment building of 3 stories. The roof is convered with solar PV panels and Elkien is researching its options for local delivery without first feeding into the grid. In the first phase of the pilot 6 appartmenst were included in the pilot. After succesfull conclusion of that phase, it is being scaled up to include all 24 apartments.

Techneco
Techneco:
monitoring heatpumps
phase: up and running | Qboxes: 20

The first pilot we started was in partnership with Techneco, one of the Netherlands’ leading manufacturers of heat pump systems. In this pilot primarily the digital communications between external energy systems (such as heat pumps) and the Qbox are being tested. A heat pump is a controllable energy system and therefore poses a relevant optimizing opportunity within the Qurrent system. The Techneco pilot is our longest running pilot.

Eneco
Eneco:
local energy balancing
phase: up and running | Qboxes: 5

Together with Eneco, one of the leading utilities in the Netherlands, we are exploring the possibilities and value of local balancing. Switching demand or production locally can have big impact when applied on a large scale. In this pilot we switched local electricity demand based on higher level load settings.

OVG
OVG:
energy systems in commercial real estate
phase: up and running | Qboxes: 1

Together with OVG, the largest office real estate developer in the Netherlands, we are testing the monitoring, optimization and administration of energy systems in office buildings. OVG is a leading developer of green buildings and its customers are using more and more collective energy systems. The Qurrent system both optimize and administer such systems and is therefore a potential tool for OVG.

Woonbron
Woonbron / Rotterdam Climate Initiative
phase: under construction | Qboxes: 72 est.

Another significant pilot is in partnership with Woonbron, a housing corporation with over 50.000 homes and apartments in Rotterdam and The Hague, and the Rotterdam Climate Initiative, partner of the Clinton Climate Initiative and C40 cities. In this pilot electricity, heat and cold, is being generated through PV panels and ground source heat pumps.

By creating a Local Energy Network with the Qurrent system for the whole complex,, collectively generated energy can be supplied directly to the residents, without use of the main grid. This improves the financial performance of the energy generators. The pilot with Woonbron and the RCI is in preparation; construction of the building has started early 2010.

Private residences: PV in a Local Energy Network
phase: up and running | Qboxes: 5

In this pilot three private residences are connected in a private Local energy Network. It is indeed the only one of our pilots where, in an existing residential situation, a private network with a collective main connection to the grid exists. Energy is being generated by PV panels (two systems) and distributed to the three dwellings.

The Qurrent system is currently monitoring production and consumption. In the next phase we will also be optimizing the use of the PV production by switching some load.
